Alexander Powell, Head Sommelier
Alexander inherited his desire for wine from his mother and father, a desire that would soon develop into a passion for the Newfoundland native. From humble rural beginnings, Alexander would soon find himself immersed in the fast-paced and ever growing culinary world of Toronto, working under the tutelage of renowned Chef Susur Lee. With a devotion to the art of wine, Alexander discovered a taste for gastronomic excellence, a "calling" as he would describe it--one which he has since mastered. A Certified Advanced Sommelier with Court of Master Sommeliers, Alexander's journey to Don Alfonso 1980 has been both extraordinary and a true testament to his legacy. Alongside the mastery of Chef Ernesto laccarino, Alexander's expertise is truly demonstrated as he skillfully bridges the gap between excellent food and magnificent wine. Throughout his career, Alexander has embraced the diversity of the art of wine--standing firm in his belief that wine is as beautifully complex as humanity, in respect to culture, origin and spirit. The magic and charm of this fine art translates to Alexander's impressive conduct, which he enthusiastically performs at Don Alfonso 1980, using an impressive wine list, which includes 700 labels and rising. Alexander's international travels and extensive education have equipped him with the knowledge, experience and inspiration to become the expert he is today.
